    India Crosses 67,600 EV Chargers — Where the Real Gaps Are in South India

    As of 7 August 2026, India has 67,657 EV chargers installed including 1,139 battery-swapping points, the Ministry of Heavy Industries confirmed. Public-charger energy consumption is up 72% year on year. Both numbers sound like the problem is solved. Neither says anything about where those chargers are.

    Density is not coverage

    National counts hide brutal concentration. Chargers cluster in a handful of metro cores and along two or three flagship corridors. Tier-2 cities, district headquarters, temple and tourism routes and industrial belts remain thin — and those are precisely the places where a single well-sited hub owns the catchment outright.

    The South India picture

    Karnataka alone reports 6,805 charging stations, the second-highest in India, heavily weighted to Bengaluru. Tamil Nadu is scaling toward a 20,000-station target by 2031. Kerala is executing PM E-DRIVE Phase II through KSEBL across 277 locations. Telangana continues under its 2020–2030 policy via TGREDCO. The state totals look healthy; the district-level maps do not.

    Why the 72% consumption jump matters more than the charger count

    Rising consumption per charger means existing sites are being used harder, not that new ones are unnecessary. Queueing at the few reliable DC guns on a route is now a common driver complaint. Utilisation at that level is exactly what makes a new adjacent site profitable from month one rather than month eighteen.

    Reliability is the differentiator, not count
